H20 Proficiency • In deep water, demonstrate deep and shallow head and foot first entries from a height • Demonstrate a backward roll entry, wearing clothes and swim 10-15m • Demonstrate the ability to recover an unconscious victim from deep water, bring the victim to the surface and carry him or her to the nearest point of safety • Demonstrate a minimum 5m head-up approach in to a head-first surface dive • Support a 4.5kg object at the surface for 3 minutes or better in deep water • Wearing a shoulder loop and line, swim a 100m individual medley in 3 minutes • Swim 400m in 12 minutes or better First Aid • Demonstrate the ability to find and count the pulse and respiration rates on a partner • Demonstrate the immobilization of a breathing victim with a possible spinal injury, on land Recognition and Rescue • Simulation in the water of the appearance of a weak swimmer, non-swimmer and injured swimmer • Demonstrate the ability to perform and recognize three different hand signals • Walk the perimeter of the aquatic facility to locate a submerged object within 30 seconds • Perform a search of an area with both shallow and deep water • With a partner, perform a low-risk rescue of a non-swimmer or a victim with external bleeding • Treatment for shock • Perform a rescue of an unconscious, non-breathing victim in deep water. |

Learn life saving principles embodied in the four components of water rescues: judgment, fitness, knowledge and skill. Rescuers learn toes, carries and release methods in preparation for risky and challenging rescues. Develop stroke efficiency, endurance in a timed swim and techniques for managing for injuries in shallow water. This prerequisite for the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course, candidates learn foundation instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. Course is 30 hours with 8 hours of practice teaching. |

Instructor candidates focus on how to apply information from the Assistant Water Safety Instructor course and develop additional instructional skills, stroke development, drills and corrective strategies to plan, teach and evaluate the entire Red Cross Swim continuum. Course is 25 hours with 12 hours of practice teaching. Lifesaving Society Principles are taught. Participants will learn to teach the lifesaving society Swim Patrol and Bronze Metal Programs. |
